Friends,

This month I will cast my vote for my Dad, Fred Smith, for Johnston County Commissioner. I was in high school the first time I had the privilege of voting for my Dad, and I’ve campaigned for him in Johnston County and almost every county in North Carolina during his time in public service.

During the 10 years since Dad last held public office, it has been nice watching him settle into his passions: his farm (he is the largest producer of SimAngus bulls in Johnston County), his family, and his business.

Over the past decade Dad received numerous calls asking him to consider running for office or engaging in a campaign. Each time he would consider but then pass on the opportunity. However, when the opportunity came for him to run for the District 1 seat on the Johnston County Board of Commissioners this year, I could tell that this time it was different.

Serving as a County Commissioner has always held a special place in Dad’s heart. He has often told me that his time as a Commissioner was the most rewarding period of his public service because he could see how his work directly impacted the citizens of Johnston County.

Dad decided to step back into the arena as a candidate this year because he knows Johnston County is at a crossroads and believes his experience, perspective and proven leadership can help our County. His only goal is to leave Johnston County in a better place for my generation and my children’s generation.

I have worked for, with, and around my Dad for my entire adult life. I had a front row seat watching him navigate a business through the toughest recession of our lifetime. The grit, decision-making and leadership he displayed are exactly what our County needs NOW! Johnston County’s leaders will face some big, heavy-hitting issues in the near future, including public infrastructure, education and schools, growth management, and public safety.  Dad has the knowledge, skills and experience to step in and lead on these issues on day one.

We need experienced, proven leadership, and Dad unequivocally can provide that. His experience working with the other commissioners, school board members, mayors as well as the N.C. General Assembly and our federal delegation will bring the RESULTS we need in Johnston County.

As a millennial who calls Johnston County home, is raising a family here and employs over 150 people here, I believe there is a time and place for everything. Now is the time for a proven leader who has the experience, knowledge and skills to deliver results on day one!  Dad has the kind of wisdom and insight that can only be gained through experience, and Johnston County needs his proven leadership now more than ever.

I ask for your VOTE for my Dad, Fred Smith, a conservative, strong man of faith and proven leader who will do great things for Johnston County.

Additionally, I’d like to INVITE you to a Free BBQ and Town Hall with Fred Smith at “The Paper Co” in Clayton on Thursday, Feb. 27th at 6:30 p.m. This will be a great chance for you to meet Dad and hear his vision for Johnston County.

Thank you in advance for your support! If you’d like to learn more about Dad’s experience and his vision for Johnston County, please visit www.electfredsmith.com.

Sincerely,

Reid Smith
